Commercialization, Research & Development

We move ideas into the marketplace with a wealth of support and expertise.

Saskatchewan's two largest cities – Regina and Saskatoon – have distinct areas of expertise supported by universities, colleges and research parks.

Saskatoon specializes in agricultural biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and environmental research. The University of Saskatchewan is the province's largest research organization, with annual research revenue of more than $100 million. It has the most comprehensive range of life science colleges in Canada. Saskatoon is also home to the Canadian Light Source, one of the world's most advanced synchrotrons.

The University of Regina is a world leader in energy and climate change research. In 2008, the university launched a new international centre to help establish Western Canada's leadership in the worldwide deployment and acceptance of carbon dioxide capture and storage. The new centre was created in partnership with Royal Dutch Shell.

With locations in Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert, Innovation Place research parks have an international reputation for enabling companies to make the jump to commercialization. The Association of University Research Parks (AURP) named Innovation Place the 2009 Outstanding Research/Science Park in recognition of its role in supporting the growth of science and technology related economic development in the Province of Saskatchewan. Innovation Place is the second Canadian park to receive the award in its 13-year history. A recent economic impact study of the tenants of the Innovation Place research parks in Saskatoon and Regina and the Forest Centre in Prince Albert indicated the clients contributed just over $909 million to the economy of the province in 2011. Innovation Place developed the province's first LEED Gold certified building – the Forest Centre in Prince Albert – and continues to be a champion for green building design, construction and operation.
