Milestone

Moose Jaw
City Council unanimously supported a proposal to provide funding in a bid to host the 2013 Juno Awards celebration. The plan is a joint submission with Regina for the music awards and Moose Jaw to host the Juno Cup charity hockey game at the multi-plex and various other Juno acts at the Mae Wilson Theatre. Outlook
WaterWolf Advisory Planning commission held their launch. The planning commission was created by the WaterWolf Economic Development group as part of an attraction strategy for the Lake Diefenbaker region and became a reality through federal funding of $250,000 from Western Economic Diversification Canada. The commission represents 13 rural municipalities, 23 local governments and the Whitecap Dakota First Nation. The goal of the committee is to provide regional planning assistance to the area, such as growth standards and advice on common approaches to development. (The Outlook, June 18, 2010)

Meadow Lake

Prince Albert Region

Arborfield
CanPro Ingredients Ltd’s canola protein concentrate plant in Arborfield is now up and running. The plant is set to process 34,000 metric tonnes of whole seed canola annually, with anticipated production of 14,000 metric tones of canola oil, 8,800 metric tonnes of canola protein and 10,880 metric tonnes of canola hulls and syrup. Fort a la Corne
Gold Shore Inc. held an open house in Melfort to answer public questions on the Star-Orion South Diamond Project at Fort a la Corne. Open houses were also held at Meath Park, Choiceland, Nipawin, Tisdale, and Prince Albert. Gold Shore is currently in the process of finalizing an Environmental Impact Assessment. Shore Gold Inc. has signed  a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with both the Metis Nation – Saskatchewan Eastern Region II and the Metis Nation – Saskatchewan Western Region II, committing the parties to discuss Shore Gold’s Star-Orion South Diamond Project at Fort a la Corne. The company is working toward making a production decision on the mine in early 2011. (Star Phoenix, June 24, 2011)

Hudson Bay
Weyerhaeuser informed associates at its Hudson Bay Oriented Strand Board mill that it intends to recall the majority of the facility’s unionized hourly production work force by July 6, 2010. The mill has been closed since July 2008. At the time of closure, the mill employed about 170 people. They are recalling 108 of the hourly employees. Humboldt
RE/MAX of Saskatoon has purchased the Discovery Ford building located in the city’s downtown area and will soon become home to a variety of businesses. Carlton Trail Regional College has taken over part of the facility for their construction, carpentry, plumbing and gas fitting classes. An insurance agency from Calgary will be taking up about 1,400 square feet of space. The second storey of the building has been rented by an engineering firm that is moving into Humboldt. Access Communications will also be locating offices in the building. A local business has rented 1,200 square feet of the space for an office equipment display area, and a high-end furniture manufacturer out of Saskatoon has rented space so they can begin operations out of Humboldt. Re/Max will also house their Humboldt branch business in this facility. (Humboldt Journal, June 16, 2010)

HILDA House, a housing project for adults with special needs that provides 24-hour care in a wheelchair accessible home, is currently under construction. This is an initiative with the Humboldt and District Community Services and the Ministry of Social Services. (Humboldt Journal, June 9, 2010)

Manitou Beach
G-G’s Gallery and Gifts is the latest business to open its doors at Manitou Beach. The owners are Michael Gaudet and Sharon Gibson. They offer their own art for sale, plus other Saskatchewan-made products in the gift store. (The Watrous Manitou, June 14, 2010)

Melfort
Richardson International Limited (Richardson) will be making enhancements to increase capacity and efficiencies at several Richardson Pioneer Ag Business Centres in Western Canada. Richardson announced that they are proceeding with the next phase of their multi-year strategic plan to expand and advance their network of grain-handling and crop input facilities. Between June 2010 and January 2011, Richardson will invest $15 million to expand Business Centres in Saskatchewan and Alberta. In Melfort, storage will be increasing capacity by 14,000 metric tonnes. Regina Region

Regina
Wholesale Sports Outdoor Outfitters held their grand opening. The store specializes in outdoor sporting equipment such as hunting, fishing, camping and related activities. The Regina store has about 28,000 square feet of floor space and will employ about 30 workers. (Leader Post, June 12, 2010)

Iannone’s Footwear & Shoe Clinic, located on 13th Avenue, is celebrating 50 years in business. (Leader Post, June 15, 2010)

Regina had the second lowest vacancy and the largest rent increases in the country in the month of April. Regina had a 0.8 per cent vacancy rate in April and saw average rents increase by 7.1 per cent. The average two bedroom rent in Regina was $786 in April last year, compared with $858 in April 2010. Bazaart, an outdoor arts/crafts show, took place at the MacKenzie Art Gallery. Approximately 7,500 people traditionally visit Bazaart. This year 123 artisans were showcased. (Leader Post, June 18, 2010)

Regina-based Hillberg & Berk will showcase its newest jewellery brand, Memento Mori, this summer at Lilith, the North American concert tour and traveling music festival founded by Canadian musician Sarah McLachlan. An official ground breaking ceremony for the Grasslands Regional Shopping Centre was held. About 41 stores, many of them new to Regina, will be involved in the first phase of the project. Among those stores will be Lowe’s Home Improvement, Reitmans, Sleep Country, Addition Elle, Jones New York, Golf Town, Bulk Barn, Urban Barn, and Co-op. Phase 1 is slated to be completed by this fall. Phase 2 and 3 will include a number of small big-box tenants and a town square. (Leader Post, June 19, 2010)

The new Newo Yotina Friendship Centre held an open house. Newo Yotina, which means four winds in Cree, offers a variety of services to its clients such as public phones, public computer, tax preparations, client advocacy, general referrals such as housing, as well as distribution of second-hand clothing. The RCMP Depot Division, the national cadet training facility in Regina, will be hosting an open house on July 4th to celebrate the academy’s 125th anniversary. There are 16 venues available for the public to view, including the fitness centre, the firearms complex, operational training centre, and the RCMP chapel which is the oldest building in Regina. For the first time, the dormitories will also be on display. The last open house was held 15 years ago, in honour of the academy’s 110th anniversary. (Leader Post, June 25, 2010)


Saskatoon Region

The Conference Board of Canada reports that housing starts activity should be positive in Saskatoon in the short term, but slightly negative in the longer term. Short term essentially means the rest of 2011. (Star Phoenix, June 12, 2010)

Saskatoon City council approved a number of changes to how building permit fees are calculated. As of August 1, 2010, the city will calculate building permit fees under a new structure that accounts for the size of the construction project instead of the estimated cost. The City of Saskatoon was fined a total of $10,500 for failing to meet the province’s occupational health and safety regulations. The city failed to ensure its public works employees were protected from cave-ins of sliding materials in a trench while replacing water lines in September 2008. (Star Phoenix, June 18, 2010)

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's (CMHC) rental market report shows that Saskatoon, as of April, has an average apartment vacancy rate of 2.1 per cent compared to a 1.9 per cent vacancy rate during the same time in 2009. The region's average rental rate for an apartment increased to $843 per month in April compared to $790 per month in April 2009. (Star Phoenix, June 16, 2010)

The federal and provincial Affordable Housing Trust will provide $11.5 million to build a 65 unit low income housing complex in Saskatoon. The 65 unit facility will be added on to the Lighthouse supported living facility to bring the total number of units to 128. (Star Phoenix, June 18, 2010)

The federal Skills Link program donated $48,000 to Engele and Kook Associates to help 11 disadvantaged youth in Saskatoon. The program will provide job and life skills training to help the youth develop job skills through work experience. (Star Phoenix, June 24, 2010)

Saskatoon-based Titan Uranium Inc. has completed permitting and licensing its Sheet Mountain uranium project in Wyoming. (Star Phoenix, June 17, 2010)

Fisheries and Oceans Canada has approved its federal environmental assessment screening report on the use of the Mallard tailings management facility (TMF) at Golden Band Resources Inc.’s Jolu mill. (Star Phoenix, June 19, 2010)

JNR Resources Inc.’s winter diamond drilling program has extended uranium mineralization at its Way Lake project in the Athabasca Basin. A total of 2,773 metres was drilled in 14 holes during the program, with seven of the holes testing the Fraser Lake B zone. (Star Phoenix, June 19, 2010)

Titan Uranium Inc. will start its 2010 drilling program on the Border Block project in northern Saskatchewan mid-summer. The program will consist of about 1,500 metres of diamond drilling. The project is the subject of a 2008 letter of agreement between the Saskatoon based company and the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp. (Star Phoenix, June 19, 2010)

Cameco Corporation purchased an additional 2.1 per cent of UEX, bringing the total percentage owned up to 23.3 per cent. Cameco Corporation made the purchase for investment purchases as UEX has uranium properties in northern Saskatchewan’s Athabasca Basin. (Star Phoenix, June 24, 2010)

Gold Band Resources Inc. has secured $7 million American from Sprott Asset Management LP to help finance its La Ronge Gold Project. The Saskatoon company will also launch a non-brokered private placement offering to raise an addition $5 to $7 million. (Star Phoenix, June 24, 2010)

The Great Western Brewing Co. has been acknowledged as one of Canada’s 50 best managed businesses. (Star Phoenix, June 18, 2010)

Local developer Ken Achs has received a prestigious award for his role in helping to preserve Saskatoon buildings. Achs was behind the recent transformation of the King George Hotel into luxury condominiums and retail space and announced plans this spring to turn the Modern Press building into Mid-West’s new headquarters. Bluepoint Investment Corporation has purchased the Saskatchewan Communications Network (SCN). Bluepoint will pay $350,000 for the physical assets and film and video assets of the educational broadcaster, and has indicated it plans to spend approximately $1.75 million a year on Saskatchewan productions.
