Estevan
KRJ Fabricating Ltd. has relocated to a new shop. The company, owned by Randy Franke and Ken Mehler, is in the new KRJ Industrial Park east of the city in the Rural Municipality of Estevan. The owners of KRJ purchased 60 acres of land in 2006 with intentions of developing a new industrial area for existing and potential businesses. (Pipeline News, August 2010)

Apex Oilfield Services (2000) Ltd. has moved to a new 12,500 square foot building on 10 acres in the Nisku 2 Industrial Park northeast of the city. The head office of Apex is in Red Deer, Alberta. The company handles a variety of rental equipment with drilling rigs as their primary target customers. (Pipeline News, August 2010)

The Academy of Learning has been closed due to failure to comply with the legislative requirements that govern vocational schools. (Estevan Mercury, July 28, 2010)

Midale
Palko Environmental Ltd. has landed a listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The company has a market capitalization of approximately $27 million. Steve Peterson, president of the company, along with family, has grown the company from a water disposal site to a major company with four Alberta sites offering solid waste and water disposal. Currently the Midale facility employs 20 people. (Pipeline News, August 2010)

Stoughton
Crystal’s Pet Shop has opened. Crystal Begin is the owner. The pet shop not only offers a variety of pets from scorpions to ferrets and more but also the food and supplies necessary to look after the pet. (Carlyle Observer, July 23, 2010)

The Poplar Tree Inn has opened for business. The hotel features 43 rooms, a breakfast room, automated teller, microwaves and fridges. The hotel is owned by a group of 17 shareholders, Sangster Group Lodgings Ltd. (Pipeline News, August 2010)

Weyburn
Industrial Electric (Weyburn) Ltd. celebrated 35 years of service. The business is a major maintenance and installation contractor for manufacturing and processing industries in the oil and gas sector. (Pipeline News, August 2010)

Panther Drilling, a locally owned company, is completing their third rig. Panther Rig 3 will be a jackknife rig with a triple derrick. (Pipeline News, August 2010)

Southern Industrial and Truck Ltd., a business owned by John and Dennice Rouse, have moved into a new 36,000 square foot shop. The company includes two other ventures, Rouse Industries and JR Wellsite Power Ltd. Southern Industrial has been in business for 21 years. Currently the company employs 42 people as well as summer students. (Pipeline News, August 2010)

SaskPower completed construction of a new $8.5 million substation project to support the demand for electricity in the Weyburn area. (Weyburn Review, July 28, 2010)


Moose Jaw Region

Belle Plaine
Alpine Plant Foods held the grand opening of their new liquid starter fertilizer manufacturing plant. This is their first plant in western Canada. The company has five plants, two in Canada. Briercrest
Briercrest Grain Limited (BGL) has opened a new seed cleaning plant. Briercrest area stakeholders formed BGL about eight years ago to purchase the local Sask Wheat Pool elevator, which loads producer cars for the Canadian Wheat Board. (Moose Jaw Times Herald, July 24, 2010)

Gravelbourg

Moose Jaw
A new building supply store has been given approval by City Council to move ahead with development plans on Thatcher Drive East. Pro-Dev International had applied for a discretionary use application to construct a 30,000 square foot building. Debbie Winkler has opened Cleopatra Hair and Nail Studio in Moose Jaw. At this time there are just two stylists working in the salon with space for three more stylists. (Moose Jaw Times Herald, July 23, 2010)

July has been a strong month for Tourism Moose Jaw. Though numbers have not been tallied, the tourism information centre has seen a high volume of visitors which is a good indication of the success of the local tourism industry. (Moose Jaw Times Herald, July 29, 2010)

Galaxy Cinema is installing a 3-D screen in its Moose Jaw location. Movie goers will no longer have to travel to Regina to see films in 3-D. (Moose Jaw Times Herald, August 5, 2010)

The Ogema Farm and Auto held the grand opening of their new 8,000 square foot building recently. Over 300 guests attended the opening. Owner, Wayne Myren, originally purchased the business in 1984 and at that time remodeled the building and set up Ogema Farm & Auto. (Deep Star South, July 2010)

Hudson Bay
Gold Source Mines Inc. reported results on 27 core holes completed for 3,769 metres drilled during the 2009-2010 winter exploration program at its wholly-owned Border Project located near Hudson Bay. Numerous intercepts of greater than 40 metres of coal were encountered with the coal in the Niska 107 deposit nearer to surface, generally showing lower ash content and higher calorific values than other deposits. Humboldt
Construction has begun on Tim Horton’s facility. This is a new franchise for Humboldt to be located in the Quill Centre development. (Humboldt Journal, August 4, 2010)

The Regional Newcomer Gateway (Gateway), a new resource for people moving to the area, held its grand opening in July. Prairie Innovation Enterprise Region assisted with the opening of this facility. There will be 11 Gateways opening across the province. Janine Hart is manager of the Humboldt office. The Gateways are an initiative of the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program, Skilled Worker Branch. (Humboldt Journal, August 4, 2010)

Biz Pal, a one-stop online business permit and licence service, was launched in Humboldt. The BizPal service in Humboldt was developed by the City of Humboldt, the Province of Saskatchewan and Government of Canada. Kinistino

Regina Region

Regina
Ground has been officially broken at the site of the new Regina Public Library branch. Construction will begin on an attachment on the south side of the Core Ritchie Neighborhood Centre on 14th Avenue. The new branch will be approximately 3,400 square feet, over three times larger than the existing branch. The total cost to build the facility is about $1.5 million. The branch is scheduled to open in the spring of 2011. (Leader Post, July 23, 2010)

306 Hip Hop Sk8 Shop, located on 9th Avenue North, recently opened. Drew Hincks is the shop owner who had a vision of starting an independently funded youth facility, where kids could come and learn about hip hop and skateboard culture. The shop has over 7,000 square feet of space to offer lessons in hip hop, break dancing and DJ’ing on turn tables. The shop also includes an indoor air conditioned skate park. Jarron Yee has opened the first aboriginal owned and operated pharmacy in the province, The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, located on 9th Avenue North. In addition to pharmaceutical services, other services include bone-density screening, cholesterol testing, annual flu shots and medication reviews. (Leader Post, July 26, 2010)

Work has started on Phase 2 of the Wintergreene Estates Retirement Living project. The expansion will include 42 units for independent living and 36 rooms of personal-care households. The general contractor is Westridge Construction. (Leader Post, July 27, 2010)

Bon Jovi with Kid Rock performed at Mosaic Stadium to about 35,000 fans, about a third of which were from out of town. This translates into demand for hotel rooms and meals, packed pubs and nightclubs. According to published reports, Bon Jovi’s tour is a top money maker among the concerts currently touring the world. Edible Arrangements, on E Quance Street, will be celebrating their grand opening at the end of August. Edible Arrangements specializes in decoratively cut fruit, which is designed to look like flowers. Saskatchewan Beach
Over the past few months several local improvements have been made. New playground equipment has been installed at the main beach and recreational park. The main thoroughfare has been repaved. (Waterfront Press Regional, July 15, 2010)


Saskatoon Region

The Saskatoon Region Association of Realtors (SRAR) data shows an 18 per cent decrease in home sales, 357 homes were sold in July 2010 compared to 438 homes sold in July 2009. Bedroom communities also saw sales fall 34 per cent to 71 homes sold in July 2010 from 108 in July 2009. While sales dropped the average selling price in Saskatoon rose two per cent to $289,715 in July 2010 from $283,531 in July 2009. Outlying areas purchase price rose to $284,158 in July 2010, up 12 per cent from $254,123. The number of homes listed decreased seven percent to 550 properties from 594 listed in July 2009; equating to a more balanced market for buyers. Home sales in August are expected to be similar to July. (Star Phoenix, August 4, 2010)

According to Statistics Canada, the value of building permits in the Saskatoon region dropped significantly from May to June, but comparatively rose at a robust rate year-over-year. As its monthly building permits report shows, Saskatoon’s census metropolitan area (CMA) noted a 47.6 per cent drop in permit value from May to June 2010, falling to $51.5 million from $98.4 million. However, when comparing June 2009 to June 2010, the value of building permits in the CMA rose 30.8 per cent from $39.4 million last year. (Star Phoenix, August 6, 2010)

SaskPower sold its old customer service office in downtown Saskatoon for $2.5 million to Dr. A. Nayar Medical Profession Corp. (Star Phoenix, August 4, 2010)

The nation’s largest distributor of industrial, safety and fastener products, Acklands-Grainger Inc., has purchased 12 acres of land in Saskatoon to build a new distribution centre featuring a 100,000 square foot warehouse. Construction on the site is expected to begin in early 2011, with the centre expected to be up and running by late 2011 or early 2012. (Star Phoenix, August 4, 2010)

Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. more than doubled its earnings in the recently released 2010 second quarter report opposed to the same period last year. Potash Corporation stands by its forecast of 50 million tonnes of global potash shipments this year, with its share ranging between 7.5 and 7.8 million tonnes for a 2010 potash gross margin of between $1.4 billion and $1.7 billion US. The first protein production run at BioExx Specialty Protein Ltd.’s Saskatoon plant successfully produced protein with a purity level of 82.5 per cent. BioExx focuses on the extraction of oil and high-value proteins from oilseeds for the global food, beverage and nutrition markets. (Star Phoenix, August 4, 2010)

According to the Conference Board of Canada, near-term employment prospects for the Saskatoon region remain positive. The Saskatoon census metropolitan area (CMA) is placed in the up category when it comes to job gains in the next couple of months. Conference Board data shows the Saskatoon CMA has a growing number of help-wanted ads, meaning the labour market is strengthening and a stable level of labour market tightness. The University of Saskatchewan board of governors gave tentative approval to the Royal University Hospital as the location of the Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan. The decision allows the Saskatoon Health Region to begin the design phase of the project. (Star Phoenix, July 31, 2010)

The Saskatoon Downtown Youth Centre received funding for two new transition houses to shelter young women from poverty and violence. Provincial and federal funding for two new houses will create 10 transitional beds for women aged 12 to 15, primarily of aboriginal ancestry, who are homeless or vulnerable to homelessness. The Affinity Credit Union in Langham donated a total of $9909.34 to the Langham District Heritage Village and Museum, the Langham curling rink and the Langham Centennial Arena. (Country Press, July 28, 2010)

The Running Room Ltd., which runs ongoing clinics teaching consumers of all fitness levels how to run, and Weight Watchers International Inc., which runs ongoing support meetings encouraging members to embrace healthy lifestyle changes, recently teamed up for a marketing alliance expected to last for several years. The two companies share ideological similarities in that they both want to promote their business through a community of consumers who form a support system in trying to make lifestyle changes together. Bernard Callebaut, owned by Calgary based chocolatier, Bernard Callebaut, has been placed into receivership. The company has 30 stores in Canada and the United States, including two in Saskatoon. Each franchisee owns and operates independent from the company, but sells the company’s products. To date the Saskatoon stores have not been affected by the receivership. The new Four Points by Sheraton Saskatoon hotel’s location was chosen to cater to businesspeople, tourists and other visitors spending time at events on the south side of the South Saskatchewan River. It features 119 guest rooms, meetings rooms, specialty suites, a fitness centre, swimming pool, café and restaurant. Average occupancy rate is expected to be on average 70 per cent. Farm World, owned by Tex Prete, Trevor Rumpel, Craig Cumming and Jeff Saufert, will soon be celebrating its official reopening. The Kinistino farm equipment dealership was initially destroyed by a fire December 2008. (Star Phoenix, August 4, 2010)

The City of Swift Current is running out of land. Richardson Pioneer terminal is currently undergoing a $3.3 million expansion with the erection of two 7,000 tonne grain bins. The expansion will allow an additional 14,000 metric tones to be stored on site. The terminal opened in 2000 and employs two full-time, two casual and two contract workers.
