In April 2012, there were 531,800 people working in Saskatchewan. That was 13,100 more than in April 2011 (seasonally unadjusted), and was the highest level of employment on record for the month of April. Saskatchewan ranked third in terms of percentage change among the provinces.

At 5.4% in April 2012, the province’s seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate was the third lowest in Canada and well below the national rate of 7.5%.

Saskatchewan had an increase in full-time jiobs (+17,500) and a decrease in part-time jobs (-4,300) compared to April 2011. Non-agricultural employment increased by 15,400 (+3.2%) in April 2012, while agricultural employment was down by 2,300 (-5.8%) compared to 2011.

According to survey results released in March 2012 by Manpower Inc., a multinational staffing company, employers in Regina and Saskatoon are optimistic about the April to June 2012 period. Of the employers surveyed, 93% in Regina and 93% in Saskatoon expect staffing levels to increase or stay the same during that period. Among the 46 cities surveyed, Regina ranked fourth with a net of +30 in hiring increases, while Saskatoon ranked 23rd with a net of +16 in hiring increases.

March Building Permits Set Record
