Saskatchewan’s central location in North America puts it within one day’s drive of a market of 60 million people and within two days’ drive of more than 270 million people. As a major exporter, the province has developed an extensive rail and road network.
A recent national study ranked Saskatchewan first for freight transportation, primarily because of a high ratio of tonnes of freight per kilometre of rail. Our highway and municipal road networks constitute the largest rural road system in Canada, totalling more than 190,000 kilometres. The province has 2,400 trucking companies, two international airports, two major rail lines and nine shortline railroads.
To accommodate economic growth, the federal and provincial governments, along with the City of Regina, are developing a Global Transportation Hub to the west of the city. This inland port will include major private-sector projects, such as a $200-million facility for Canada’s largest food distributor.

The government is calling on Saskatchewan communities that were adversely affected by the economic downturn to apply for funding from the Community Development Trust Fund (CDTF) for economic revitalization projects.
